According to a report by Sports Mole, Liverpool are reportedly “finalising talks” with RB Leipzig to sell Harvey Elliott before the end of the summer transfer window. It is a move that has sparked debate among fans, given Elliott’s potential and Liverpool’s reduced depth in attack.
Elliott’s situation reflects both ambition and reality. At 22, he has shown flashes of creativity, scoring seven goals in the 2024-25 campaign. However, most of his appearances came from the bench under Arne Slot. Since arriving from Fulham, Elliott has registered 15 goals in 148 games, but the player now recognises regular football may only come with a move away.

Leipzig are reportedly in pole position. According to Football Insider, the Bundesliga side see Elliott as an ideal replacement for Xavi Simons, who is expected to join Chelsea. Tottenham Hotspur remain in contention, keen to add attacking quality after missing out on Eberechi Eze, yet Leipzig’s negotiations appear more advanced.
The Reds, according to Sports Mole, “would prefer to sell Elliott to Leipzig” rather than to a Premier League rival. It is a strategy that echoes previous moves this summer, with Jarell Quansah and Luis Díaz heading to Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich respectively.
Selling Elliott comes with risk. Liverpool’s squad has already endured significant changes, losing Ben Doak, Darwin Núñez and the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. Despite this, Elliott featured for only six minutes in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace and was left unused in the win over Bournemouth. His position in Slot’s plans looks increasingly marginal.
Spurs’ interest introduces another dimension. They can offer Champions League football and the familiarity of the Premier League. The question remains whether Tottenham will meet Liverpool’s valuation of around £40 million. Leipzig, by contrast, appear willing to pay and provide Elliott a starring role in the Bundesliga.
A decision is imminent. For Elliott, this represents a chance to revive his career in a league that values young, technical players. For Liverpool, it is a financial and tactical call, balancing future planning with immediate needs.

For many supporters, this potential move feels like a gamble. Harvey Elliott embodies the creative flair Liverpool fans have wanted to see developed, and at 22, his best years should be ahead. Arne Slot’s reluctance to start him in key games suggests the trust is not fully there, yet losing him after already parting with Díaz and Núñez could stretch attacking options.
The decision also speaks volumes about Liverpool’s strategy. Selling to Leipzig seems safe, protecting domestic competitiveness, but the optics are awkward. Why weaken depth after winning the Premier League only months ago? The club’s reliance on a core group of attackers could be risky if injuries strike.
Elliott leaving for £40 million makes financial sense, but supporters will want reassurance that this money is reinvested in quality. With time ticking down in the window, patience is wearing thin. If this deal happens, Slot and the recruitment team must deliver an attacking signing to keep the momentum of last season intact.
