Arsenal returned to training on Wednesday looking to put Monday’s fatal defeat to Newcastle United behind them, but the squad were clearly still carrying the effects of that match.
Of those who featured on Monday, Emile Smith Rowe, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, and Gabriel Magalhaes were all absent on Wednesday.
Tomiyasu’s absence isn’t a surprise, as it was pretty clear he was injured as he came off against Newcastle. White may just have been rested, given he had to play 90 minutes on his first game back from injury.
As for the other two, fears will now grow that they too have picked up injuries.
Gabriel and Smith Rowe were both substituted in the second half against Newcastle, seemingly tactical changes at the time, but it’s possible the duo weren’t fit to continue.
As usual, some u23 players stepped up to fill the gaps in the squad, with Marcelo Flores, Salah-Eddine Oulad M’hand, Charlie Patino, and Zak Swanson all taking part in Wednesday’s session.
None of the four have made their Premier League debut yet, though Patino made his cup debut and scored earlier this campaign.
Whilst Arsenal still have the slimmest of chances of making it back into the top four, you’d imagine Mikel Arteta will continue to go as strong as possible to win Sunday’s game – rather than giving debuts to academy players.
