It’s expected that the 56-year-old will head straight to the vacant post at the Germany national team but who will the Bundesliga champions look to bring in to replace him?

We’ve studied some of the potential candidates.

The favourite

Julian Nagelsmann

It’s inevitable that RB Leipzig boss Nagelsmann will one day end up at the Allianz Arena, and he is the clear favourite to take up the soon-to-be vacancy.

Officials at Bayern have long been a fan at one of the brightest young prospects in world football and it feels like the stars are now aligning.

The 33-year-old is yet to win a trophy in his six years in management but has been praised for his development of youngsters, tactical innovation and attractive style of play.

Bayern strangely are a club that will soon need to begin a new dynasty with some of their big players heading towards the twilight of their career – why not give the future of German football the keys to it all?

The free agent

Massimiliano Allegri

There have been reports in Italy in the last week that Bayern are considering bringing in the former Juventus manager.

Allegri was responsible for a Bayern-esque dominance of Italian football in his six years in Turin, winning Serie A five times as well as the cup double on four occasions.

He’s been without a club since leaving Juve in 2019 and definitely has the pedigree to be considered for the hot-seat but would his desire for pragmatism go down well with fans who have been watching all-out attacking football over the past 18 months?

The one that got away

Jürgen Klopp

Bayern executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has made no secret of his regret at not being able to bring Klopp to the Allianz in the past.

“Uli was in talks with Klopp at the time. We had to make a swift decision and then we agreed to get Jürgen (Klinnsmann).

“It just didn’t work. I’m very sorry. It wasn’t a good decision for both parties.”

With Liverpool likely to be out of the Champions League next season, will Bayern test Klopp’s resolve this time?

The former Borussia Dortmund trainer has repeatedly stated he will honour his contract (until 2023) at Anfield so it will be difficult, but the Bundesliga champions may try to get the one they always wanted.

The left-field choice

Xabi Alonso

Alonso was recently strongly linked with Borussia Mönchengladbach before signing an extension to his current terms as Real Sociedad B manager.

He is thought of fondly at Bayern after winning three Bundesliga titles during his four-year spell between 2014 and 2017.

There is plenty of noise about his potential ability as a head coach and they could opt for something akin to a Pep Guardiola at Barcelona moment.

We’d be here for it.
