Real Madrid lost to Girona on their visit to Montilivi. Our team took control of the ball from the start, enjoying three chances to break the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes. The first came with barely 60 seconds on the clock when Modrić's left-footed cross was met by a Rodrygo backheel but Juanpe did superbly to turn it behind for a corner. The next opportunity was Nacho's cross-cum-shot, followed by a Valverde strike which was smothered by Gazzaniga.

The hosts' response to Ancelotti's side's dominance came in the form of one man: Castellanos, scorer of all four of Girona's goals on the night. The opener came on 12', a towering header from inside the six-yard box, before he beat Lunin in a one-on-one with 24 minutes gone to make it two. Real Madrid were now faced with the uphill task of a comeback and on 34’ they duly cut the deficit. Asensio's measured ball to the back stick was perfect for Vini Jr., who was on hand to nod home. The score was 2-1 at half-time, but victory would be put beyond reach after two further goals from Castellanos in the 46th and 62nd minutes. Asensio looked to reduce the deficit in the 69th minute with a long-range shot that struck Miguel and came close to surprising Gazzaniga. Lucas Vázquez would manage it in the 85th minute, however, after a nice move by Vini Jr, who got away from the defender with a magnificent manoeuvre on the byline to set up the Galician. From then until the end, Madrid would regularly make it to their opponents' box, but weren't able to find the back of the net.
