Sutton United boss Matt Gray is a contender for the vacant Northampton Town job, according to Football Insider.

Northampton are on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Keith Curle on Wednesday, after a poor season so far.

The Cobblers sit 23rd in the League One table having won only one of their last 11 games, with Curle’s lengthy tenure coming to an end.

The 57-year-old spent two-and-a-half years in charge of Northampton, guiding them to promotion from League Two via the play-offs last season.

According to Football Insider, Sutton manager Matt Gray is a contender to replace Curle at Sixfields Stadium.

Gray was appointed as Sutton boss before the 2019/20 season, guiding the club to a 15th-placed finish as the National League season was curtailed last term.

This season, the 39-year-old has his side fighting for promotion to the EFL, with Sutton sitting third in the National League table with four games in hand on league leaders Torquay United.

Gray has won 22 out of 56 games in charge of Sutton, and has previously had assistant manager roles at Aldershot and Crawley.

The Verdict

It would be a surprise to see Gray leave Sutton.

They are having a great season and are playing some great stuff in the National League, and if they win their games in hand, then they could pile the pressure on Torquay.

It would be a big step up for him as a manager, and leaving a National League side to join a League One outfit would be a good move for him personally.
