On 12 December 1984, the Santiago Bernabéu was the scene of a remarkable comeback staged against Anderlecht. Real Madrid met the Belgian side in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup. In the first leg, they slipped to a 3-0 defeat in Brussels, but the second leg proved to be another story on a memorable night for madridistas.
The heroics began when the team got off to a flying start, opening up a 3-0 lead in the opening 30 minutes. Sanchís, Butragueño and Valdano all scored to set the Whites on course for the comeback. However, in the 33rd minute, Frimann's goal flipped the tie back in Anderlecht's favour. Real Madrid then showed plenty of determination and before the break Valdano made it 4-1. A heroic Butragueño There was still the whole of the second half to play and Madrid needed one more goal to advance to the quarter-finals. That goal came just two minutes after the restart when Butragueño fired in a fierce shot from inside the area. On what was a truly special night for Real Madrid, the club's current director of Institutional Relations played outstandingly well, completing his hat-trick in the 49th minute after a fine piece of skill inside the six-yard box. The final 6-1 score rounded off one of the team's great European nights. The result saw Madrid continue on the road to clinching their first UEFA Cup.
