David McGoldrick has admitted that he has no hard feelings towards Sheffield United following the club’s decision to cut ties with him.

The forward is set to become a free-agent this summer when his current contract expires.

As confirmed by the club’s official website, McGoldrick is one of three Blades players who were not offered fresh terms as Lys Mousset and Luke Freeman are also set to leave the club.

During his time at Bramall Lane, McGoldrick has managed to produce a host of impressive performances for United.

The 34-year-old would have been hoping to spearhead another push for promotion last season after helping his side secure a place in the top-flight in 2019 by scoring 15 goals in the Championship.

However, after making 19 appearances at this level during the previous term, McGoldrick suffered a season-ending thigh injury in February.

In the absence of the forward, the Blades were eliminated from the play-offs earlier this month as they suffered defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals of this competition.

Reflecting on the news that he is not set to represent the Blades next season, McGoldrick has offered an honest assessment on the club’s decision to cut ties with him.

Speaking to The Star, McGoldrick said: “I’ve got nothing but respect for this place, and that’s not changed.

“He (Heckingbottom) sat down with me and we spoke.

“He wants to do things and he wants to do the things he feels are right for United.

“There’s young players coming through here now, like Rhian Brewster and they’re all going to be important people going forward.

“I know that and I can see that, so he wants them to continue being involved.

“Genuinely, there’s no hard feelings.”

The Verdict

When you consider that McGoldrick still managed to show glimpses of his ability in the Championship last season by providing six direct goal contributions at this level, it will be interesting to see whether he joins another team this summer who currently participate in this division.

The forward managed to build up a rapport with the club’s supporters by producing a host of mesmerising performances during his time at Bramall Lane.

Given that the Blades are set to be without McGoldrick next season, they will need the likes of Brewster, Daniel Jebbison and Oliver McBurnie to step up to the mark by providing competition for Billy Sharp.
