Sunderland were forced to settle for a point in their clash with Fleetwood Town yesterday as they squandered a two goal lead at Highbury Stadium.
The Black Cats made a fantastic start to the game as Ross Stewart opened the scoring in the 18th minute of the clash.
Aiden McGeady then doubled Sunderland’s advantage in the second-half as he slotted his spot-kick past goalkeeper Alex Cairns.
Callum Morton gave Fleetwood a lifeline in the 81st minute to set up an enthralling end to the game.
The Cod Army then netted an equaliser as Ged Garner fired home a penalty in stoppage-time.
As a result of this minor setback, Sunderland were overtaken by Wigan Athletic in the League One standings as Leam Richardson’s side sealed an impressive 4-1 victory over Accrington Stanley.
With the dust having now settled from this clash, here are THREE things we clearly learnt about the Black Cats after their 2-2 draw with Fleetwood.
Ross Stewart’s presence could be crucial as Sunderland look to launch a push for promotion
Tasked with filling the void left by Charlie Wyke, Stewart has made a superb start to the season for Sunderland as he has already scored five goals in seven appearances for his side.
Particularly impressive during yesterday’s clash, the forward managed to win 10 aerial duels as he recorded a WhoScored match rating of 8.34.
In order for Sunderland to become legitimate contenders for automatic promotion this season, Stewart will need to maintain his fitness as he is unquestionably one of the club’s most important players.
Elliot Embleton should now be a mainstay in the Black Cats’ starting eleven
After achieving promotion to the Championship last season during his loan spell at Blackpool, Elliot Embleton will be looking to replicate this achievement at the Stadium of Light next year.

The midfielder produced another promising performance for the Black Cats yesterday as he provided an assist for Stewart’s goal.
Currently averaging an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.10 in League One, it could be argued that Embleton should now be a mainstay in Sunderland’s starting eleven for the foreseeable future.
Sunderland will need to improve defensively if they are to secure a return to the Championship
Sunderland manager Lee Johnson would have been extremely frustrated to see his side crumble under pressure on Saturday.
The Black Cats were particularly poor during the build up to Fleetwood’s first goal as they allowed Morton to finish from close range after not tracking his run.
If Sunderland are to secure a return to the Championship in 2022, they will need to learn from these mistakes to ensure that they won’t happen again in the coming months.
