3 things we clearly learnt about Coventry City after their 1-0 win v Stoke | OneFootball

Coventry managed to seal a victory over fellow play-off challengers Stoke in midweek and are now back within four points of the top six.

The Sky Blues have been in and around the play-off places for the majority of the campaign so far and having overcome the Potters on Tuesday night, it shows that the club certainly means business this season.

It was Viktor Gyokeres who led his side to the three points, scoring in the 68th minute to ensure that it was the home team that sealed the victory.

After a solid showing from the club then, here are three things we learned about Coventry from the game.

1. Viktor Gyokeres may have fired blanks recently – but the talent is there to be seen.

The striker has bagged a total of ten goals so far this season, which is a fantastic return considering it is his first proper season in the Championship.

At just 23-years-old to boot, there is plenty of time for him to get even better and yet he is already ripping opposition defences apart. It isn’t just his goals that he contributes to Coventry either, as he completed more dribbles than anyone else on the pitch and is well capable of picking out a teammate after a darting run.

The forward then could be the real deal for a few seasons yet – and if he continues to get better and better as he develops with the Sky Blues, they may have their leading man up top for the next few years now.

2. Coventry can and will dominate games against big opposition, so don’t underestimate them.

Many would consider Stoke as ‘big’ opposition for Coventry to face. They’re led by a former international manager, they have former Premier League talent in their ranks and a decent squad considering that they have been up and near the play-offs in recent years (and even graced the Premier League).

However, last night, the Sky Blues tore their opponents apart. They managed more shots, more chances created and constantly tested Jack Bonham in the Potters goal. Even though the away side had more possession, it was Coventry who pinned them back and kept them on the back foot, keeping them agitated and unable to create chances of their own for most of the game.

The Sky Blues deserved their win and and made Stoke look weak in doing so – and they can do it to any number of teams in the league.

3. Ben Sheaf deserves more credit in controlling games

Another talent that Coventry should do their utmost to keep going forward is Ben Sheaf.

Last night, he made more chances for his team than any other player on the field. The thing is, it isn’t an uncommon occurrence for the Sky Blues midfielder. This year he has three assists already – one of the best rates in the squad – and has arguably been one of the most consistent performers for them.

Sheaf constantly helps his team to dictate games from the centre of the field and last night he was at it again, chipping in with an assist and looking lively throughout.

If Coventry can keep him and Gyokeres going forward, then they have a really solid spine to their squad and could be ones to watch for promotion.
