Reading have had a surprisingly good start to the season as Paul Ince’s side sit third in the Championship table.

The Royals boss had to be patient in the transfer market as he knew the club were operating under difficult circumstances, so they had to look in the free agent market.

Of course, even though the window is shut, they can still bring in those out of contract and reports have suggested that Michael Hector could be the next to arrive.

The centre-back is without a club and is now training with Ince’s side as he looks to earn a deal. And, here we outline THREE reasons why bringing the 30-year-old in would make sense for Reading…

They could do with a centre-back

With Scott Dann out until the New Year and Liam Moore still a while away from full fitness, it would make sense to bring in another defender.

It’s not as if Ince is desperately short in that department but the reality is that the fixture list is pretty hectic over the coming weeks and the squad could be tested, so adding another centre-back would help.

Lewis Hamilton

Yes No

He has good experience

An obvious positive to Hector is that he knows what the division is all about – and he’s also played for Reading before.

He will need to get up to speed in terms of fitness but once he’s ready there will be few doubts about throwing him into the team. He has won promotion from this level relatively recently with Fulham and will help the younger players in the squad with his know-how.

He will bring more physicality to the side

Ince has regularly spoken about wanting to make this Reading side one that is physically imposing and difficult to play against.

We know how tough the Championship is and Hector, who is 6’4″ is going to add more power and strength to the group. Despite their excellent start, the Royals have conceded 14 goals this season, so it’s an area they can improve.
