An Englishman abroad

We’ve heard about how Chris Smalling, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham are thriving in Serie A, but there’s an English-born player at Torino who has been quietly doing the business since 2019.

Aside from a loan spell at Fulham during the lockdown season, Aina has cemented his place as a regular member of the first-team at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Under boss Ivan Jurić, the Granata have enjoyed a decent start to the season, sitting equal on points with cross-city rivals Juventus with three wins from their opening six matches.

Aina – a wing back – has played almost 300 minutes of action already this season, contributing to the attacking play as much as in defence.

Yet if you’re thinking that Gareth Southgate might come calling for Aina, you’d be mistaken. The 25-year-old represented England at all youth levels, however opted to accept a senior call-up from Nigeria back in 2017 and has made 17 total appearances for the Super Eagles.

The London-born player was linked with a move to West Ham over the summer but a return to the UK never materialised, leaving Aina among a number of his compatriots enjoying success in the Italian top-flight.

Berardi due a goal

Italy Euro 2020 hero Domenico Berardi has consistently found the back of the net for Sassuolo over the last ten seasons with the Neroverdi.

Last term he netted 15 times, but that’s not all.  He also provided 14 assists for his teammates, more than any other player in Italy and only Kylian Mbappé (17) registered more assists in all of Europe’s top five leagues.

In the current campaign, Berardi has been a little quieter than usual, with only one goal to his name in 2022/23.

Yet his consistent scoring record tells us that he will undoubtedly find form at some point, and why not in Saturday’s match with Torino?

While both of these sides have struggled to find the back of the net of late, history would suggest that encounters between them have tended to be high-scoring affairs.

Torino have won five of their last six home matches versus the Neroverdi, firing in 17 goals in the process.

That said, they’ve only kept a clean sheet one one of those six occasions, with Sassuolo themselves having breached the Toro defence nine times in reply.

Could this be the weekend for both teams to discover their shooting boots?
