A trio of iconic figures at La Liga giants Real Madrid may on Saturday have taken to the pitch in a major international tournament for the final time.
As much comes owing to developments in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
The first two of four final-8 outings at the Euros were played to completion a short time ago.
And, when all was said and done, it was Spain and France who emerged triumphant, at the expense of Germany and Portugal respectively.
In the process, a whole host of the continent’s most recognisable players were sent packing, with three such figures having spent lengthy stretches of their careers on the books of the aforementioned Real Madrid.
First up came Toni Kroos, whose outing with Germany, en route to a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Spain, marked his very last in the professional game.
Then, a short time ago, came a pair of Portugal stars.
Condemned to a heartbreaking penalty shootout downing at the hands of France, both Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe, in all likelihood, took to the pitch for their nation for the very last time at a major tournament.
In fact, it is not at all out of the question that their respective careers with Portugal could tonight have come to a definitive close.
