A match where Newcastle United got off to the perfect start with Callum Wilson’s second minute goal following a great team move…only for then the visitors to then take control for pretty much the rest of the match.

POSITIVES

Atmosphere

As expected, the atmosphere was off the scale.

A capacity crowd celebrating the end of the tight-fisted Ashley regime and the dawn of something different.

I can’t testify for the entire stadium, but I was in the top corner of the Gallowgate, and the singing rarely ceased up there.

In the few moments that it quietened down I could hear chants from other sections, so I assume it was fairly raucous all round. The exception of course being when we had a medical emergency in the East Stand. Full credit to the reaction of the players to alert the referee to the situation and well done to the medical staff for their quick actions. Best wishes to the man in question and hopefully he’ll be out of hospital soon.

With new directors in attendance, they will already have discovered what a valuable weapon these fans can be if they are fully behind their team.

Wilson’s Back

He’s going to be key to us not being the richest club in Championship history next season.

First game back and first goal immediately.

He almost set up ASM for an equaliser when we were 2-1 down as well.

He’s such a vital player and we need to keep him fit until at least January if we are going to start to turn the tide.

Yes, we lost. Yes, we’re still winless. But for the first time in over a decade, it doesn’t feel like the bad times will last forever.

We have hope and belief, emotions that were in short supply under our previous custodian. I think the next transfer window must be the first one I’ve actually looked forward to since the very early years of Ashley when I was still naïve to his workings.

Instead of worrying about big players exiting, we can be confident of our squad being strengthened in the areas that need it. Which is pretty much everywhere.

NEGATIVES

New era, same old Newcastle

It felt like that enthusiasm that was radiating around the ground seeped into the players and we took the lead in no time at all.

For a short period after that, we were playing good football and I was dreaming of just how great the day could become. The link up play was decent, we were winning every challenge. Tottenham couldn’t lay a glove on us.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of the game left and our opponents eased into it and took complete control. We didn’t really have any answer and the substitutions were suspect, as ever. Shelvey was a complete numpty and got himself sent off 23 minutes after being introduced.

Has Bruce got any sleeves left to roll up?

He must be completely free of dust by now surely?

I’m writing this Monday morning and maybe by the time it’s published he’ll already be gone.

He surely can’t still be in charge for Palace. I’m not going to criticise the new owners. I will trust their judgement but Bruce being in charge automatically reduces our chances of getting vital points.

My despair grew as the days dragged on, last week, and he hadn’t been removed from his post. I don’t think there can be any doubt to Amanda and co that he is not wanted. They have been clear about the patient approach they wish to adopt but there are things that need immediate attention. Bruce’s removal must be top of that list, even if we don’t get a suitable permanent replacement for a few games.

Still Infected By Sports Direct

I think many of us were hoping that when any new owners came in, the Sports Direct hoardings that desecrate our stadium would be torn out immediately.

The reality of course is that this will take time.

We don’t know if Mike Ashley has agreed any deals to keep it all up until the end of the season or longer. Plus, it’ll take more than a click of the fingers to sort it all out, so we might have to wait a while to see it go anyway. What a sight St James’ will be when every mention and memory of that brand is swept away.
