Heung-min Son scored four as Tottenham battered Southampton 5-2 at St Mary’s.

The South Korea international was in fine form as he picked apart the Saints, with Harry Kane grabbing all of the assists and one for himself at the end.

Here’s what we made of a fine away day for the north London side.

That’s our guy

We knew there was a world class player in there somewhere, waiting for his moment to come out.

That moment came here against Southampton, with Tanguy Ndombélé showing everyone that he is not the flop many had tarnished him as.

There have been well-documented problems between the midfielder and José Mourinho, with the Portuguese coach often dropping the record-signing from squads last season.

But he was trusted to play alongside Pierre-Emile Højbjerg at St Mary’s and was truly superb.

Always in space, always on the half-turn, always playing with his head up and always finding a team mate.

His pirouette and pass for Son’s opener was astonishing and just the sort of confidence booster that can only help him in the long run.

Assist king

Harry Kane – poacher, goalscorer and now assist-merchant.

He’s usually an old fashioned number nine, leading the line and scoring goals for fun but this afternoon Kane turned provider and was utterly brilliant at it.

The Englishman had an assist for all of Son’s four goals and made a new Premier League record in the process.

There have been some who have called Kane one-dimensional and simply ‘just a goalscorer’ but that was clearly not the case here.

Kane was dropping deep at every opportunity, almost playing as a false nine and creating the space that allowed Son to run in behind Southampton’s high line and finish with ease on.

The prospect of him doing the same for Gareth Bale this term is a mouth-watering one.

This is the end

So then, what of Dele Alli?

For the second consecutive game the England international was left out of the Tottenham squad.

It’s a decision that reportedly left the Spurs players ‘shocked’ and ‘confused’ with many wondering what the midfielder had done to earn José’s ire.

There was a time when Dele looked like the real deal with Spurs and England, a player with the world at his feet and certified status as a legend in the making.

But something has gone wrong since his breakthrough in 2015, with games too often passing him by and chances rarely taken.

Reports from the Telegraph on Sunday claimed that Paris Saint-Germain are now in talks to sign the 24-year-old and we can’t help but feel that an exit over the next few weeks will suit all parties.

A chance for Dele to get away from the Premier League spotlight, focus on his football and become the player he is truly destined to be.
