3️⃣ points as Chelsea net in stoppage time to claim an unlikely draw

Chelsea came back from 3-0 down to claim an incredible 3-3 draw away at West Brom.

A comically bad first half from the Blues saw them concede three unanswered goals, but Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham all netted in the second half to give the west London side a share of the spoils.

What does it say about this Chelsea squad that Thiago Silva made his Premier League debut here this evening and was immediately handed the captains’ armband?

The veteran Brazilian has been at the club less than a month, has played a total of zero minutes in the league and speaks very little English.

And yet here he was, marshalling a defence that included Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso.

Slow across the pitch, unable to keep up with the pace of the game, struggling to get a grip of Callum Robinson – Thiago Silva was a disaster.

It’s the perfect encapsulation of everything that is wrong in west London right now – an unbalanced squad that, despite the vast amounts spent in trying to fix, still needs emergency surgery, and quick.

Lots of money has been thrown at the problem, but without a proper coach who can organise a defence, it will all be totally meaningless.

Which brings us to …

Simply not good enough

About two weeks’ ago I wrote a piece arguing that Chelsea were crazy to trust Frank Lampard with a war chest of over €120m and that any serious club would have thanked this novice coach for the work he’d done last season and seen him on his merry way.

With the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri available, why would they gamble a huge budget on a coach with two full seasons in club football, neither of which have been totally convincing?

I will be accepting personal apologies from everyone who DM’d me.

Chelsea have been appalling in every Premier League game so far this season.

They were incredibly lucky to come away with a win at Brighton, they were totally outplayed by Liverpool last weekend and they were embarrassing at the Hawthorns today.

Yes, they fought their way back to claim a draw late on, but is that good enough for a club that has spent this amount of money over the summer?

West Brom have been found wanting in both of their games so far this term, and Lampard’s side made them look like Premier League veterans for large parts.

Chelsea fans can delude themselves that this was a point gained, but there needs to be some serious work done over the next few weeks or things will be looking incredibly bleak at Stamford Bridge.

It will come

We’ve gone all in on Chelsea here but it would be remiss of us not to mention West Brom who claimed their first point of the campaign.

Yes, throwing away a 3-0 lead against one of the title challengers will hurt, but for a side who some have complained don’t score enough goals, this was a performance full of attacking flair and intent.

Their nerves got the better of them in the second period and it was clear that once Chelsea pulled one back, it would be a draw come full time.

But we’re sure that they will put in a full 90 minutes sooner rather than later and that a win can’t be far off.

Pass the bucket

And a final added point because we can’t talk about this game without mentioning one of the most egregious things to come out of this clash.

Jesus wept, those kits.

We reach a new nadir this season at the quality of jerseys on show in the Premier League, but these two are by far the worst in the division.

West Brom’s barcode number is offensive on almost every level while Chelsea’s  third strip is like a malarial dream come to life.

Appalling.
