Bayern needed less than 10 minutes to toss Chelsea to the side as the eight-time defending Bundesliga champions coasted to a 7-1 aggregate victory after winning 4-1 on the night.

A brace from Robert Lewandowski allowed Bayern to cruise to victory alongside goals from Ivan Perišić and Corentin Tolisso. Tammy Abraham netted for the visitors.

The victory sets up the tastiest of quarter-final ties as Bayern will take on Barcelona on 14 August after they progressed with a win over Napoli tonight.

Here is what we made of the second leg, which was anything but suspenseful.

Chelsea have a LOT of work to do

Though Chelsea were decimated by injuries and suspensions, we’re quite confident they would not have fared much better with their strongest XI.

Their only goal of the tie came courtesy of a complete gift from Manuel Neuer. Otherwise, Frank Lampard’s side looked pretty pedestrian against who many argue are the Champions League favourites.

Despite being heavy underdogs and Bayern playing far from their best football, the German giants still dominated possession and looked far and away the better side.

If it wasn’t clear and obvious before, Chelsea were exposed on multiple occasions late, with the defence completely asleep on Bayern’s third goal.

Honestly, the Blues are fortunate the scoreline wasn’t worse, as Thiago and Thomas Müller each missed golden opportunities to extend the scoreline.

Bayern’s centre-back woes may return

Despite being ahead 5-1 at the time and coasting along, Jérôme Boateng has presented Bayern with a fresh injury scare as Callum Hudson-Odoi clipped him on an otherwise seemingly harmless run of play early in the second half.

Though Boateng surprisingly carried on for a few minutes after the incident, he eventually came off, making way for Niklas Süle, who made his first appearance since his ACL tear back in October.

Bayern will now nervously wait for his test results to come back, otherwise they’ll have to gamble with an untested Süle or Lucas Hernandez next to David Alaba for their Barcelona clash.

Unfortunately, Flick and company only have six days to decide. Tough times.

Robert Lewandowski is the true king of Europe

We are fully petitioning that the Ballon d’Or ceremony be reinstated so Lewandowski can get his just rewards.

The 2019/20 Champions League golden boot will clearly be handed to the Poland international, who netted his 12th and 13th goals of the Champions League season.

If this season were played under normal circumstances, Lewandowski could have up to five games to extend his mark and chase Cristiano Ronaldo’s record total of 17 in a single campaign (2013-14).

Nevertheless, Lewandowski will have up to three games to do so. Mind you, nobody not named Cristiano Ronaldo has ever scored 15 or more goals in a single CL run, so the 31-year-old is already in elite company.

Oh, and did we mention he’s scored in EVERY Champions League match this season? It’s a stat worth repeating.
