3 players who could leave Gotham FC in the summer of 2025

The summer break is finally here, and NJ/NY Gotham FC will not play again in the NWSL until August 1.  That is not to say friendlies will not be scheduled, but the Bats will not play a competitive match for five and a half weeks.  This will give time for injured players to recover and for the team to continue to improve their craft.  Ideally, they will extend their recent winning streak when the season returns.

At the same time, the secondary transfer window will open on July 1 and will close on August 25.  This gives Gotham FC and the rest of the NWSL the entire summer to make changes to their roster.  They could send players elsewhere or bring in new players.  The NJ/NY team will hopefully not see too many players leave after the insane offseason that saw a drastic change to the roster.

However, there are players who could possibly leave the team.  Notably, it does not mean that anyone who is listed will leave this summer.  Rather, there is a chance.  So, here are three players who could leave Gotham FC in the secondary transfer window.

3. Jéssica Silva

The most obvious player who could leave in the transfer window is Jéssica Silva.  The reason is that her contract is only until June 30.  The forward’s playing time has been limited due to injury and a few excused absences.  Therefore, it is possible that one or both parties will not agree to a new contract.

There is no question that Silva is talented and would continue to be a great depth piece for Gotham FC.  She is a star for Portugal after all.  However, she might want to go to a team where she can get more playing time.

Still, due to missed time, Silva might want to stay with the Bats to get back on track with her playing, improve her stock, and give her a chance to sign a good contract with a future team, which could be Gotham in the end.  That is why another contract until the end of 2025 might be beneficial for her future.  Nevertheless, it would not be shocking for the Portuguese international to leave.

2. Taryn Torres

Taryn Torres has only been with Gotham FC since she began her professional career in December 2021.  She was drafted by the Bats earlier but did not sign with them until then.  As such, she has played two full seasons for the team, as she missed 2023 due to an ACL injury.

Still, the midfielder is on her way to playing her best season yet, for she has already appeared in 11 regular-season matches for the Bats.  Torres has also made a few starts, especially recently.  Some fans might think she is finding her best form.  However, her playing time might decrease again once Gotham is healthy.

Hence, her improvement this season might lead Torres to seek a move elsewhere where she can get more playing time.  Plus, she is talented where she could be an everyday starter on other teams.  Gotham FC would be better off keeping her, for she is a great depth piece and an important player.  Alas, the club has shown their willingness to help those on their roster move elsewhere if the desire is there.

1. Stella Nyamekye

Gotham could also see a player or two head out on loan to increase their playing time, especially if they are not ready to be consistent contributors to the team.  One such player is Stella Nyamekye.  She was signed in the offseason with the belief it would take some time for her to grow and adjust to life and play in the NWSL.

Truthfully, the Ghanaian could benefit from being loaned out.  Her talent is there, and the Bats should not let her leave, especially since they committed to her.  But, more playing time could lead Nyamekye to success in a year or two with Gotham.  An increase in experience and playing with another team could turn her into a solid player.  Of course, the team might believe it is better for her to continue training with the Bats.

When all is said and done, Gotham FC might want to send someone, whether it is Nyamekye or another player, on loan to free up some space for a veteran defender.  The NJ/NY needs another player who can start and act as a depth piece.
