A trio of Newcastle United players are all very likely to be suspended in the very near future.

With 12 Premier League matches played, the three Newcastle United players have all picked up four bookings each.

The rules stating that any player who gets five bookings from their side’s first 19 Premier League matches. will serve a one-match ban in the same competition (Yellow cards are not carried over to the League Cup or FA Cup).

This is the state of play with cards for Newcastle United players so far in this 2021/22 Premier League season:

4 Matt Ritchie, Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles

3 Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey (2 of his 3 came in the home Spurs match leading to a red)

2 Ciaran Clark, Joelinton, Javier Manquillo, Jacob Murphy, Allan Saint-Maximin, Fabian Schar

So Callum Wilson, Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles are all just one booking away from an automatic one match ban.

In order to prevent this, they have to avoid another card in any of the next seven Premier League games.

Upcoming Newcastle United Premier League matches:

Saturday 27 November 12.30pm – Arsenal away (BT Sport)

Tuesday 30 November 7.30pm – Norwich home (Amazon Prime)

Saturday 4 December 3pm – Burnley home

Sunday 12 December 2pm – Leicester away (Sky Sports)

Thursday 16 December 8pm – Liverpool away (BT Sport)

Sunday 19 December 2pm – Man City home (Sky Sports)

Monday 27 December 8pm – Man Utd home (Sky Sports)

Thursday 30 December 7.30pm – Everton away (Amazon Prime)

So, Man Utd at home is the 19th Premier League match of the season for Newcastle United and if any player gets a fifth yellow card of the season against Everton, it wouldn’t lead to an automatic suspension.

However, any Newcastle United players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their team’s 32nd fixture, will serve a two match suspension in the Premier League.

I think that of the trio on the brink, clearly Callum Wilson is the biggest worry and the idea of him missing for example either the Norwich or Burnley matches through suspension, would be really bad news. Love him as we do, Wilson has been a bit daft to have picked up four yellows in only eight Premier League appearances this season as a striker. Whereas defenders and midfielders are always potentially going to pick up fairly regular bookings.

Whilst Callum Wilson would be expected to automatically get back into the team after any suspension, for Lascelles and Ritchie it would be interesting to see what happens if they are booked in the next seven games, how their replacement(s) would do and whether it would lead to a longer absence from the team.
