At FLW we have identified three Portsmouth starlets who could generate huge transfer fees in the future.
Portsmouth will be targeting safety in the Championship this season, after emphatically securing promotion from the division below last year.
In their efforts to achieve this goal, they made a strong start at Leeds United, securing a 3-3 draw thanks to a standout performance from January signing Callum Lang, who scored twice.
However, John Mousinho won't be getting ahead of himself, understanding that there is a tough season ahead.
For this reason, Pompey will have to utilise much of their squad, including some of their younger players who will be desperate to make an impact.
With this in mind, we’ve highlighted three starlets who could have a breakthrough season for Pompey and potentially attract significant transfer fees in the future.
A player that will be familiar to Pompey fans is Ryley Towler. The 22-year-old has been at Fratton Park since signing from Bristol City in January 2023 but struggled for game time last season as he played just 259 minutes of league football.
Having barely featured in the division below, you would be forgiven for thinking he wouldn't get many minutes in the Championship. But, Mousinho opposed this opinion and gave Towler a full 90 minutes at Leeds following his impressive pre-season performances.
Thrown in the deep end, he performed well, despite conceding three goals. This would give hope that he is set for a strong 2024-25 campaign.
If he does perform well, he can help be a catalyst to help keep Pompey alive in the Championship for another season.
At 22-years-of-age, this would see his transfer value begin to skyrocket, and it is feasible that he could make a move to a top-tier side in a few years.
For now, it’s crucial that he continues to get regular game time under Mousinho, who could help him develop into one of the standout defenders in the second tier.
For a 20-year-old, Terry Devlin has accumulated a great deal of experience, already making over 110 appearances in his professional career. Albeit most of these have been for Dungannon and Glentoran, it can only benefit the youngster who could have a bright future at Pompey.
Contracted at Fratton Park until 2026, Devlin made 25 appearances in all competitions last season, providing four goal contributions for the side.
Having followed this up with a Championship debut against Leeds, he could be in line for an action-packed season as he endeavours to earn his place in the side.
If not, then it is possible that he could move away on loan, but he certainly holds a great deal of value to Mousinho's side. Speaking last season, the Pompey head coach waxed lyrical about the involvement Devlin could have in the future, adding that they have to use him at the right times.
This puts the midfielder in a nice spot then, and if he can break into a starting role, he could command a hefty sum in the future.
Finally, we have Harry Clout, who has enjoyed a terrific pre-season for Pompey, receiving a great deal of praise from Mousinho.
Speaking about him after their pre-season game against Havant and Waterlooville last month, the head coach said: "I thought Harry caused Havant a lot of problems, it was really pleasing to get him a bit of game time.
"He has looked athletic and caused problems, he’s direct, is willing to get at full-backs and, when the ball has got to him, has shown some really good technical ability as well."
As a second-year scholar, you doubt that he would be offered this opportunity unless he could hold a great deal of future value to Portsmouth.
With this contract up in June 2025, it would be no surprise to see the teenager offered his first professional deal at Fratton Park at the conclusion of the campaign.
Gaining experience through a loan move elsewhere might be the first step, but in a few years, we could see him becoming a regular standout on the South Coast.
Harry Clout is a name to keep an eye on then as he bids to take his first step in the men's game.
