3 EFL Cup upsets we could see in Round Two

Article image:3 EFL Cup upsets we could see in Round Two

After a stunning series of upsets in Round One which saw 9 out of 11 Championship sides lose to lower-league opposition, we’re left with mostly League One and Two sides alongside Premier League opposition in EFL Cup Round Two. With that comes the potential for even more shock results – here are 3 more we could see in mid-week.

Bradford City vs Blackburn Rovers

Fresh off a win against Championship form side Hull City in the last round, Bradford City now welcome a Blackburn Rovers team who find themselves in a similar position to The Tigers.

Rovers have struggled hugely in recent fixtures, losing their last two league games by an aggregate score of 6-0, and travel to Valley Parade where Bradford can boast a 100% record so far this season.

One further aspect to this tie is, of course, Bradford’s penchant for cup runs having made the final of this competition in 2013 where they defeated Arsenal and Aston Villa along the way. Couple that with Blackburn’s rough form, and an upset could well be on the cards here.

Bolton Wanderers vs Aston Villa

The Whites welcome Aston Villa to the University of Bolton stadium after a 5-1 thrashing of Salford City the previous round, and are going well in League One in seventh place despite a loss last weekend to Sheffield Wednesday.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, appear to be in disarray under Steven Gerrard, with only a narrow win over Everton sparing their blushes from being outplayed and outfought in losses to Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. The mood in the squad is low, and with Kortney Hause having left, Carney Chukwuemeka out the door and Cameron Archer looking close to following him out on loan, they will presumably be fielding an even weaker rotational team than usual ahead of an important league clash with West Ham at the weekend.

Bolton are settled in the league, and have a massive stadium ready to welcome their one-time Premier League counterparts – as of Monday, 10,000 more tickets for the game had been sold than for their 6,000-strong attendance for the previous round’s tie against Salford. Expect them to be right up for this, and prepare yourself for a shock result if Aston Villa fail to match their enthusiasm.

Wycombe Wanderers v Bristol City

Wycombe endured a difficult spell with three consecutive losses in the league, but followed that up most recently with a fantastic 3-0 win away at Barnsley.

Bristol City have been excellent of late and are undefeated in four in all competitions, but the main concern has been their away form. Just one point away from home in the league at Wigan Athletic.

Star man Andreas Weimann has started every competitive game for The Robins so far this season, and after making only one enforced change to their starting line-up for their two games in the last five days we can surely expect some rotation from Bristol City as the games keep coming thick and fast.

In Daryl Horgan, Lewis Wing and Alfie Mawson, Wycombe can boast some genuine Championship quality despite residing in the tier below, and under the right conditions we could well see a shock result on Wednesday night.
