Both Man United and Marcus Rashford are at a major crossroads; the player doesn’t want to be there, and the club doesn’t want him. After six months on loan at Aston Villa, he now looks set to leave his boyhood club on a permanent basis.
Despite the apparent agreement between the two parties, any potential deal won’t come easily. United are reportedly holding out for a £40 million transfer fee, the same number Villa agreed to as an option to buy, and the 27-year-old doesn’t want to take much of a pay cut.
A compromise is going to have to be made somewhere down the line, and here are three clubs we believe would be a good fit for the England international.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona’s move for Nico Williams won’t stop them from trying to sign Rashford this summer, and the forward is understood to be pushing for a move to the newly crowned La Liga champions.
From a financial standpoint, that may not be realistic for Hansi Flick’s side, however. La Liga has already warned them of their precarious FFP situation as they continue their pursuit of Williams, with the player reportedly seeking assurances before any potential deal goes through.
Rashford will have to make some major sacrifices if he wants to make the move to Spain. There is no chance Barcelona would be willing or able to pay him the £300,000 per week he is said to earn at Man United.
Eddie Howe is struggling so far in the 2025 summer transfer window. Joao Pedro has decided to go to Chelsea, Nottingham Forest have no intention of letting Anthony Elanga leave, and Bryan Mbeumo has his heart set on replacing Rashford at United.
It may be a bit of a project to begin with, Rashford will need an arm around his shoulder, knowing that he is loved and needed by the club, but once he gets going, he’s proven to be one of the best forwards in the Premier League.
Qualifying for the Champions League gives Newcastle a little bit of leeway in regards to PSR, and now they no longer have to sell one of their star men; the club can build upon what they already have. Anthony Gordon is versatile enough to be put on the right wing, allowing Rashford to slot in in his preferred left wing position.
Arsenal fans are getting pretty sick of always being the bridesmaid and never the bride after a third consecutive second-placed finish in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta needs to add goals to his side. A number nine is a must, but so is an additional contributor from out wide.
Bukayo Saka, who has been that contributor over the past few years, but in 2024-25, due to a few injuries, he’s starting to look a little more human than he used to. Arsenal won’t want to keep risking the fitness of their ‘starboy.’
Rashford may not be their number one option, Arsenal’s pursuit of Rodrygo has been well reported, although it remains to be seen how realistic prying him away from Real Madrid would be. Rashford is Premier League proven, and he can’t be worse than Raheem Sterling last season.
