As the Women’s World Cup draws ever closer, we look at three Bayern Munich players worth looking out for this summer Down Under.

Lina Magull (Germany)

Bayern’s captain will be an important part of the Germany side once again this summer.

Magull is one of the game’s premier players at breaking from midfield to provide both support to the attack and goals of her own (and that includes her prowess from free-kicks).

She evidenced that at last year’s European Championship, netting a famous equaliser in the final at Wembley as she firmly cemented her status as one of the national side’s key players.

That’s how close she has helped Germany come to glory before and a repeat can’t be ruled out, despite few seriously considering them among the tournament favourites.

That includes the Germany camp themselves, although Magull played down their hopes last summer and they came within a whisker of glory so can another repeat run be ruled out?

For a star whose trophy cabinet houses four Bundesliga gold medals and two apiece for the Champions League and DFB-Pokal, it would be unwise to underestimate the 28-year-old and her compatriots.

Georgia Stanway (England)

While Magull was left heartbroken last summer in London at coming up short in the Euros final, club team-mate Stanway was involved in jubilant celebration with her England colleagues.

Not that they were Bayern colleagues at the time, with Stanway’s move to Germany having been agreed prior to the tournament, although she hadn’t made the move by that point.

But her seemingly limitless reserves of energy and continued driving forward of the Lionesses from her engine room role was a big reason for finally delivering success last summer.

So too was her eye for the spectacular in terms of both her trademark long-range efforts and picking of passes, as Bayern fans quickly found out upon her seamless adaptation to life in Bavaria.

In her maiden campaign after her move from Manchester City, she helped them reclaim the Bundesliga title from Champions League finalists Wolfsburg by proving every bit as important in the centre of the park.

Expectations on both herself and England have now increased, something she has acknowledged, but the 24-year-old always looks capable of taking everything in her stride.

Pernille Harder (Denmark)

Admittedly, even Bayern Munich fans haven’t had a chance to watch her in action yet but this is the perfect chance to look at what she has in store for them next season.

The 30-year-old’s move from Chelsea was announced last month (along with Sweden star Magdalena Eriksson who will also be in action at the World Cup) and she is sure to prove a big hit on her return to Germany, having enjoyed a very successful spell at Wolfsburg in the past.

But before she refocuses on club duty, it is time to shine on the biggest stage of all and there are perhaps few players more deserving of this chance than Harder.

The long-serving skipper and all-time top scorer for her country, Harder is also twice a winner of UEFA’s Women’s Player of the Year award but due to Denmark’s 16-year absence from the World Cup, has never got to compete in the game’s most illustrious competition yet.

A hamstring injury threatened to heartbreakingly take that chance away from her but the forward has won her race for fitness and will be part of her side’s long-awaited adventure in the tournament.

Now to make up for lost time.
