Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-Min admits he supported Manchester United as a child

According to Pro Direct Soccer (h/t Manchester Evening News), Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-Min has revealed that he had a soft spot for Manchester United as a kid.

The 29-year-old is today one of the best players in the Premier League. Alongside Harry Kane, he forms a dangerous duo that Spurs rely on massively in the attack. Blessed with an excellent understanding of the game, Son is a difficult player to mark.

A versatile attacker, he recently signed a four-year extension at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He has scored twice in three games this season and was absent for Spurs’ loss to Crystal Palace. It is fair to say that his absence was noticeable.

Rather than feel the pulse of the club, Son’s allegiance was thanks to his admiration for South Korean hero Park Ji-Sung. The now-retired star spent a number of years at Old Trafford and played a crucial role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s title-winning sides.

“[I supported] Manchester United because obviously, Ji-sung [Park] was playing.”

Park is also a close friend of Son. The Spurs star is arguably the nation’s most recognizable footballer since the United star. The duo have largely kept the Korean flag flying high in England.

“He’s a national hero. In Korea also they would say he has two hearts. He’s a national hero for me. He’s a good friend of mine.”

Park Ji-Sung was an excellent player for United.

Park was truly a hero for a nation that has since experienced highs in world football. He showed the way for budding young Korean footballers and showed them what playing for a Premier League giant is like.

‘He gave us hope and the opportunity. It’s not easy, you know, he was the first one that played in the Premier League.”

While the chances of Son winning the league is remote at Spurs, it is fair to say that Park’s career has helped inspire him to the heights he occupies today.

Signing Son would be an excellent move for United. However, the chances of the player leaving Spurs, that too for an affordable fee is rather unlikely to envision for the fans. He is truly one of the best Asian players to grace the English top flight.
