Ben Davies reveals difference between Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino’s coaching techniques at Tottenham Hotspur

In an interview with The Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham full-back Ben Davies has pointed out the major differences between the training sessions under Mauricio Pochettino and current manager Antonio Conte.

Antonio Conte took charge of the Tottenham team last month and has been devoted to reforming the club. One area that he is mainly focusing on is the physical development of the players. The Italian has put on some intense training modules, and it seems he has been putting the players through gruelling behind-the-scenes work.

Ben Davies has featured 13 times this season for the Spurs. Even though his performance has been quite promising, he wasn’t the first choice full-back under axed coach Nuno Espírito Santo. But it seems he has found his place in Conte’s formation. The Italian has regularly trusted the abilities of the 28-year-old player.

Ben Davies Davies has revealed the extreme tactical training sessions under Antonio Conte.

The Welsh international is full of praises for the Spurs manager and has pointed out the noticeable changes that have come into action under the former Inter Milan manager. Davies played under former coach Mauricio Pochettino and reflected that the Argentine had a different approach towards the game.

It seems the current PSG manager didn’t indulge in specifics and tried to implement a wholesome training module that developed the players’ abilities towards a common goal. Davies said in the interview to The Athletic, as quoted by football.london:

“We didn’t have long sessions where Pochettino would say, ‘I want this here, this here, this here’, but the training and the work we did was actually all done for us to be in the right place. It’s tactics but without calling it tactics.”

However, the 28-year-old defender revealed a significant difference in the coaching techniques of the current Spurs manager.

Antonio Conte has shaken things up at Tottenham.

“Whereas the sessions now, we do a lot of 11 v 11 shape. A lot of simulations of what we’d expect to see.”

The Welsh player also explained the intensity of the training sessions under Conte is relatively high. The Italian is pushing the players in every session to reach extreme heights. Davies thinks physicality is an area that can be controlled, and the intense workout should have a tremendous impact on their on-field performance as they are planning to turn around the season.

From his previous work at Chelsea and Inter, we get the idea that the Italian manager is a demanding personality. However, this has worked out extensively well for the teams that he coached. The 52-year-old manager has been a serial winner, and wherever he went, silverware followed.

This could be an excellent sign for the North Londoners, who have been deprived of titles for a pretty long time. And if Davies’ words are anything to go by, we have a man who will demand the most out of these players and motivate to reach a common goal.
