With the summer transfer window almost upon us, Barcelona need to make some cuts to their squad in order to clear up space on their wage bill for new signings to be registered while complying with La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules.

It has led to speculations about the future of some of the top players in the squad. Frenkie de Jong, for one, has become a hot topic of discussion in the media, amidst strong links to Manchester United, where his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is seeking a reunion.

However, according to journalist Gerard Romero, de Jong has no desire to leave Barcelona in the summer and wishes to continue at Camp Nou beyond the current season. But, for that to happen, the Netherlands international will have to take a pay cut, adds Romero.

As per the journalist, the contract de Jong signed with Barcelona when he arrived from Ajax in 2019 promised him a significant increase in salary in his fourth year at the club.

But, given the club’s current situation finance-wise, that might not be possible. Instead, the 25-year-old midfielder would have to take a pay cut in order to continue at Camp Nou.

And, it is further claimed that it is not going to be an issue, as the former Ajax ace is more than happy to accommodate the reduction in wages.

De Jong has previously made it clear that he wishes to continue at Barcelona and wants to achieve success at the club. And, it seems like he would not be averse to foregoing part of his salary in order to prolong his stay in Catalonia.

Even though he remains a vital part of Xavi’s plans, the club might be open to the prospect of a sale should an extraordinary offer come along for the former Ajax ace. So, it remains to be seen where he will be plying his trade next season.
