Glasgow's Hampden Park stadium was the venue for the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. On 15 May 2002, the Whites further enhanced their supremacy in the European Cup competition in the club's centenary year.
Zidane was one of the stars of the final after his remarkable volley that made it 2-1 for Madrid. On the stroke of halftime, Roberto Carlos fired in a cross from the left wing to the edge of the area, where Zidane was waiting and the Frenchman struck a sensational volley to beat the German goalkeeper. In 2020, France Football magazine chose this goal as the greatest in the history of the Champions League. Beforehand, the game got off to a thrilling start, with two goals in the first quarter of an hour. Raúl gave Madrid the lead when he latched on to Roberto Carlos' throw-on to beat Butt. Lucio promptly equalised for Bayer from a corner.
Casillas proves to be decisive In the second half, César was forced off through injury and was replaced by Casillas, who was instrumental in Real Madrid’s victory. In the closing stages, the Germans carved out several chances to draw level, but the young keeper could not be beaten as the Whites secured their ninth European Cup trophy.
