It took him just 67 minutes.

On his first ever international start for Portugal, Gonçalo Ramos had his hat-trick.

His first was a powerful finish from a seemingly impossibly tight angle, and in scoring that goal he had already overtaken the man he replaced in the side for knockout goals at the World Cup.

That explosive start fired Portugal ahead, a remarkable achievement for the Benfica youngster considering he’d only ever played 33 minutes of international football and was playing in his first ever start for his country.

And it’s not like hat-tricks are easy to come by at this stage of the World Cup. The last one was Tomas Skuhravy for what was Czechoslovakia against Costa Rica in 1990.

The only player to have completed a knockout stage hat-trick at a younger age than Ramos was Pelé in the semi-final of the 1958 World Cup.

It’s the first hat-trick in the 2022 edition too.

Big things to come from this young star?
