2024 Women's AFCON: DR Congo eliminated after second defeat
Morocco defeated DR Congo 4-2 on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Rabat during the second matchday of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations group stage. The Moroccan side made the difference in the second half, eliminating the Lady Leopards in style.
DR Congo opened the scoring as early as the 6th minute, with Merveille Kanjinga capitalizing on a pass from Naomie Kabakaba to beat the Moroccan goalkeeper. Morocco responded quickly, creating multiple chances, including Ibtissam Jraïdi hitting the crossbar in the 15th minute. Ghizlane Chebbak brought her team level in the 25th minute, before giving Morocco the lead just before halftime (2-1, 43rd minute).
Back from the break, DR Congo managed to level the score in the 70th minute. Flavine Mawete finished off a brilliant team move with a rocket into the top corner, bringing the teams even at 2-2. But Congolese joy was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Ghizlane Chebbak completed her hat-trick, converting Imène El Ghazouani’s cross at the back post. Morocco kept pressing and were awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute, which Yasmin M’Rabet coolly slotted home to make it 4-2. With this victory, the Lionesses of Atlas take a big step toward the quarterfinals, while DR Congo's Lady Leopards are now officially eliminated.
