For Palmeiras, the 2022 season started earlier than for most teams due to the FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled for the second week of February in Abu Dhabi. The pre-season paid off and Palmeiras were minutes away of taking the final against Chelsea to a penalty shootout. Although suffering a 2-1 defeat, the performance put out by our men in the Middle East left supporters in high spirit for the remainder of the year.

The Recopa trophy was the first of the season. Playing against Sudamericana champions Athletico Paranaense, Palmeiras tied the away leg 2-2 and won 2-0 at the Allianz Parque to conquer the trophy for the first time in history.

While playing the international tournaments, Abel used the Paulistão as a laboratory for his ideas. The team finished the group stage unbeaten, winning the three clássicos against São Paulo, Santos and Corinthians consecutively. The invencibility was lost only in the first leg of the final against São Paulo. The 1-3 defeat at the Morumbi Stadium was avenged with a overwhelming 4-0 at the Allianz Parque, enough to put another piece of silvery in our trophy room.

The Paulistão title was won while Palmeiras were annihilating opponents in the group stage of the Libertadores. The six victories, with 25 goals scored and only three conceded, now holds the mark as best campaign ever in the group stage of the tournament. After eliminating Cerro Porteño in the round-of-16 and Atlético Mineiro in an epic battle in the quarterfinals, Palmeiras fumbled against Athletico Paranaense in the semifinals, interrupting the journey to a third consecutive Libertadores title.

In the middle of the season, Palmeiras were eliminated in the round-of-16 of the Copa do Brasil by São Paulo, in a game that will be remembered always for the disastrous VAR refereeing.

The extremely intense beginning of the season affected Palmeiras’ first rounds in the Brasileirão, and the first victory came only in the fourth round. The three points however ignited a historic campaign that resulted in the Big Green’s 11th title of the tournament. Palmeiras lost only three matches during the campaign, a record since the tournament is played under the league format. Further, the team sustained a run of 22 games unbeaten, a sequence ended only in the last round, with the trophy was already safe at the Allianz Parque.

Below, game highlights from Palmeiras’ Brasileirão anno 2022, from the first game to the one in the 35th round that sealed the championship title.

The three trophies in 2022 crowned another extremely successful season of Abel Ferreira in charge of Palmeiras. Players like Weverton, Gustavo Gómez, Raphael Veiga, Zé Rafael, Dudu, Rony and Gustavo Scarpa all displayed extremely high levels of football. Weverton was awarded with a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad and Gustavo Scarpa was elected MVP of the Brasileirão.

The season also saw Endrick’s debut and his precocious sale to Real Madrid, Rony’s bicycle kick goal (twice), Dudu’s show-stopping exhibition against São Paulo, and Gustavo Scarpa’s farewell. 2022 rendered plenty of good memories that will be cherished forever. Hail to the Third – or Fourth – Academy!
