Accumulating two points from their opening three matches, it is not quite the electric start that Luton Town fans would have hoped as they aim to continue on their upward trajectory.
Lots of positives could be taken from their draws against Birmingham City and Burnley, however, the Hatters were flat in their 1-0 defeat against Preston North End on Saturday.
Conducting the majority of his business early in the window, there only appears to be one position that Jones is hoping to strengthen in what remains of this month.
It would appear that a defender would complete Luton’s business in this particular window, one where attacking and midfield additions have been plentiful.
Here, we take a look at two realistic signings that the Hatters should make before the closure of the summer window on early next month…
Antonios Papadopoulos
Casting eyes all the way back to the start of the summer, German publication BILD credited the Hatters with an interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Antonios Papadopoulos.
The report stated that Preston North End were also battling for the young defender’s signature, in what would be a seven-figure transfer pursuit.

German newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten reported last week that the Hatters currently have an offer on the table for the 22-year-old, who is currently being assessed by the German outfit.
It is no secret that a left-footed centre-back would be on the top of Jones’ priority list, however, he has since mentioned in interviews that he understands that could prove to be too difficult, especially when talking about finding a Kal Naismith alternative.
Instead, Jones has spoken about a need to perhaps think differently, with a move for Papadopoulos having the potential to be the answer.
Matt Smith
Luton have a competitive squad as it is, and adding another midfielder would not make much sense unless it was a player who already possesses to-end Championship ability.
Therefore, suggesting a player who suffered relegation from the third-tier from Doncaster Rovers last time out seems a little absurd.
However, the Hatters have shown an inclination to start recruiting more youthful players who can immediately be sent straight out on loan, with future planning being at the forefront of all this.
The Arsenal midfielder, who has proven to be an excellent technician, has an exciting future ahead of him at just 21 years of age.
Luton were credited with an interest in Smith earlier in the window, so if they decide to pursue a similar kind of deal that they agreed with Aribim Pepple and John McAtee, then that would represent exciting business from the Hatters.
