After a lengthy recruitment process, Wayne Rooney has now firmly got his feet under the table at Home Park, and the new Plymouth Argyle boss will be looking to shape his squad ahead of the next Championship campaign.

The former Manchester United man will be casting an eye over the Pilgrims players when they return to pre-season training, with a camp in Marbella scheduled for early next month.

But it is a given that not everybody contracted to the club at this moment in time will be part of his plans come August when the season gets underway, with comings and goings expected within the next few weeks.

Here we take a look at two players who could follow Mickel Miller in leaving Devon this summer, with the wingback unwilling to sign the new deal offered to him earlier this year, with other Championship sides interested.

Tyreik Wright

It is hard to see Tyreik Wright ever putting on a green shirt again after his disastrous spell as an Argyle player, with things just not working out for the winger since his January 2023 move to Home Park.

The former Aston Villa man looked devoid of confidence in the few times that he has managed to take to the field for the Devon side, with just six starts and 503 minutes of football under his belt in his Argyle career.

A repeat of last season looks the most likely scenario for the 22-year-old, where he returned to previous side Bradford City on loan, scoring twice in 14 appearances for the Bantams and looking all the happier for his run in the team.

Rooney will likely give the young star a chance to impress during pre-season, but as he enters the final year of his deal the Greens may be tempted to try and cash in on him this summer, and use his wages on someone who will feature more prominently in the upcoming campaign.

Wright gave an honest assessment of the situation before the season came to an end, when asked about his current predicament at Home Park.

He said: “It’s football, it’s a business. If they stay up, they’ll probably get better players and spend money.

“Players might leave in the summer with the performances and the stats they’ve had this season.

“If they go down, it might be better for me. I don’t know but I’m not concentrating on that right now.”

Argyle did indeed stay up, which could spell the end for Wright, with a move to League One or League Two his likely destination.

Morgan Whittaker

It is no secret that Morgan Whittaker was a man in demand during the most recent January transfer window, with Premier League sides reportedly monitoring his progress as well as European giants Lazio.

Brentford and Fulham were both said to be interested in a move for the wide man, with a £15 million bid said to be what Argyle were holding out for if they were to let him go.

Although transfer talk has seemed to have quietened down of late, it would be no surprise to see top flight clubs - or even those with more financial clout in the Championship - try and swoop for the former Swansea City man this summer, after his 19 league goals in the previous campaign.

The 23-year-old was an ever-present in the Greens’ most recent campaign, and was a main reason they stayed in the second tier, with a number of match-winning performances, especially in the first-half of the season.

After netting his side’s first goal of the campaign, Whittaker backed it up with a hat-trick against Norwich City, as well as late goals against Middlesbrough and Rotherham United to secure crucial points for the Devon outfit.

A player with his ability to find the back of the net from range, as well as link up with teammates in the final third, is one that will be highly coveted by many a top side, and Argyle will be bracing themselves for more interest in their star man this summer.

Director of football Neil Dewsnip has already admitted as much this summer, with the rumoured transfer fee hard for a side like Argyle to turn down when the money could be reinvested into the squad.

He said: “Good for Morgan. Will there be interest in him? I'm sure there will be. Good players are at a premium in the Championship. Even in the Premier League, so we will have to wait and see what develops. I have no idea if there is anything on the table at this moment in time.

"First of all, we have got to have somebody who wants to pay that kind of money, that value. There will be discussions on that if and when that happens.”

Argyle fans will have everything cross that he remains theirs for the foreseeable future, but it isn’t out of the realms of possibility that the left-footed wonder will move on from Home Park this summer.
