Highlights

  • Stoke City manager Steven Schumacher is looking to make changes to the squad in his first transfer window, which means that some first-team players could depart.

  • Stoke City's disappointing campaign could improve under Schumacher if he makes the right decisions in the transfer window. The club may need to sell players like Lewis Baker, Ben Pearson, and Daniel Johnson to afford new recruits.

Stoke City could see a few players depart in Steven Schmacher's first transfer window with the club.

The former Plymouth boss was appointed Stoke City manager in December, and is now faced with his first transfer window just weeks after joining the club. He will undoubtedly be looking to make changes to the squad, and that will mean the departures of a few first-team players.

Schumacher has already made his first two signings for Stoke, as goalkeeper, Daniel Iverson, and midfielder, Luke Cundle, join on loan from Leicester City and Wolves respectively. Cundle spent the first half of the season at Plymouth Argyle under Schumacher, so that signing makes a lot of sense.

Stoke have had a disappointing campaign so far as they sit 19th in the table, but things can certainly change for the good under Schumacher if he makes the correct decisions in the transfer window.

The club will have to make room in the squad for new recruits, and may look to cash in on some of their current players in order to afford replacements. According to a report from TEAMTalk, one of those players that Stoke could look to sell is vice-captain, Lewis Baker. The midfielder has made just a handful of appearances this season and could be on his way out this month.

Two more players could follow suit in the coming weeks, as Football League World looks at the two other players that Stoke could be willing to sell.

Ben Pearson

Stoke City are said to be open to offers for midfielder, Ben Pearson, this month in order to afford new recruits. The 29-year-old has made 19 Championship starts this season in the middle of the park, and is one of Stoke's only true defensive midfielders.

His only assist of the season came in December against Steven Schumacher's Plymouth as Stoke suffered a 2-1 defeat. Pearson only signed for the Potters in the summer, and with his contract lasting until 2027, it is thought that the club would only accept an offer in the region of £3-4 million. Nevertheless, the midfielder is among those who could make way for potential new recruits in January.

Daniel Johnson

As per TEAMtalk's report, the third player that Stoke are open to offers for is Daniel Johnson. The attacking midfielder has made 18 league starts this season, scoring two goals and assisting two. He has failed to start the last three league games under Schumacher, so he could be on his way out in the coming weeks.

Johnson's contract expires in 2025, so now that he is coming into his final year, Stoke may look to cash in on the player before losing him on a free transfer. TEAMtalk predict that he could be available for less than £1 million, which is a decent offer for many clubs, but also provides Stoke the funds for a strong replacement.
