The Berkshire club need to cut their wage bill in line with the business plan agreed with the EFL and there are a host of senior players expected to depart due to the financial situation the club is facing.

Paul Ince has been named the permanent manager and is tasked with the rebuild. Here, we’re looking at three transfer scenarios that might play out at Reading early in the summer window…

With Orland Nyland expected to depart as a free agent and question marks over some of the younger goalkeepers at the club, it would make a lot of sense for Reading to look to sign an experienced shot-stopper this summer.

Ben Hamer’s contract at Swansea City is up at the end of June and Russell Martin has already confirmed he will be departing.

The 34-year-old has plenty of EFL experience under his belt, including 138 appearances in the Championship, and would likely be an improvement on Nyland.

As per Capology, he was on £8,462-a-week at Swansea and should be an affordable option for Reading.

He should be available straight away and it would not be a surprise to see the Royals move quickly.

In: Troy Parrott

Signing new forwards is likely to be a priority for Reading this summer and without much money to spend, leaning on the loan market could be vital.

Tottenham are expected to be open to loaning out 20-year-old striker Troy Parrott again in 2022/23 and he could be someone that Ince and co. target.

Though 10 goals and seven assists in 47 games is hardly an eye-catching return, Parrott enjoyed an impressive season with MK Dons as he helped them reach the League One play-offs and has all the attributes to thrive at Championship level.

Ince may want to bring him to the club early so he can have a full pre-season.

Money is going to be needed to rebuild the Reading squad and the wage bill has to be cut this summer, which may mean that the club decide to cash in on Lucas Joao.

According to Berkshire Live, the Royals are open to selling Joao this summer as he enters the final year of his contract.

The striker has bagged 38 goals in 83 matches for the Championship club and when fit and firing has proven himself too much for opposing defenders to handle – often going on impressive scoring runs.

But as one of the club’s higher earners (as per Capology) and someone that should generate a fee, it makes sense for them to look to offload him in the upcoming window and doing so early would give them more time to reinvest the money.
