2 Huddersfield Town players who may be disappointed not to have left in the January transfer window

Huddersfield Town oversaw a busy January transfer window, in what was Mark Fotheringham’s first opportunity to properly tweak his struggling squad.

The Terriers sit in the Championship’s relegation zone heading out of January, with work to do on the pitch if Fotheringham is to keep Huddersfield in the second-tier.

The focus in the last month has also drifted onto the transfer window and work off the pitch.

Tomas Vaclik and Jordan Smith were crucial additions in the goalkeeping department following the injury to Lee Nicholls and Matt Lowton’s arrival padded out a defensive unit with experience, allowing Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Luke Mbete to move back to their parent clubs.

Anthony Knockaert, Joseph Hungbo, Martyn Waghorn and Florian Kamberi offer new attacking depth, as does Josh Koroma, who returned from his loan spell with Portsmouth. Scott High, meanwhile, looks for an immediate impact in the midfield.

Headline departures came in the form of Sorba Thomas (loan to Blackburn Rovers) and Jon Russell (permanent move to Barnsley), with other business done with a number of young fringe players.

We look back on Huddersfield’s busy January here, outlining TWO

Kyle Hudlin

Hudlin spent the first-half of the season on loan with AFC Wimbledon in League Two, playing 13 times.

However, the 22-year-old managed just 293 minutes in those 13 appearances, 11 of which came from the bench.

It wasn’t really a surprise that Huddersfield recalled him during the January transfer window.

Since returning, the giant striker has been playing for Huddersfield’s B Team and has caught the eye with a couple of good outings.

Whether or not Fotheringham gives him a chance in the first-team remains to be seen, but if he doesn’t the decision to not loan him back out in January, even to the top of the National League, makes little sense.

Rolando Aarons

Aarons had his loan with Motherwell ended in early November, owing to an injury.

It’s unlikely that we will see Aarons work his way into Fotheringham’s plans given the depth he has in the wide positions, with the 27-year-old not sourcing a move out of Huddersfield as he aims to get some first-team minutes.

Given that likely lack of opportunities under Fotheringham, Aarons can feel quite disappointed that he’s not already sourced an opportunity away from the John Smith’s Stadium.

He is a player with plenty of talent, but just needs a break somewhere else.
