Huddersfield Town are battling relegation and are in desperate need of a spark in form heading into the second half of the season.

The season has been one blow after another following the playoff final defeat to Nottingham Forest, with that game a distant memory.

The club are now solid a contender for relegation and will be looking nervously over their shoulder as they push for results to drag them away from the bottom three.

With a squad that is lacking in quality, an outsider could make Huddersfield favourites for the drop. Coupled with their lack of creativity and goals, it doesn’t make for pretty reading.

However, even though the January window has closed, there are still players available in the free-agent market to bring in and bolster the ranks.

Here, we take a look at two free agents who would improve the Terriers and why.

Chris Martin

Chris Martin left Bristol City prior to transfer deadline day by mutual agreement and is now on the search for a new club.

With Huddersfield struggling to have much of an impact in the final third this season, Martin could provide the solution to their problems.

The former Derby forward is as experienced at Championship level as you can get, having competed at this level since his debut in 2007 for Norwich. His goalscoring record speaks for itself having found the back of the net on 112 occasions.

Martin has also provided 57 assists in the Championship and will be confident in his ability to deliver an option to top-scorer to their forward line. His ability to play with his back to goal, link up with players around him and find himself in goalscoring positions will add an extra impetus to a flat attack.

A short-term contract to the end of the season would make sense and give the Terriers a significant boost in their fight against relegation.

Dale Stephens

The former Brighton midfielder has been without a club since his deal at Burnley expired last summer, and at 33, he’d be a highly experienced option.

With plenty of top-flight experience on offer, Stephens is a player who could come in and provide some much needed guidance in the middle of the park. Whilst he may have his best years behind him, his experience would benefit would looks to be a relatively inexperienced midfield.

With Jonathan Hogg the most experience central midfielder in the team by some distance, adding Stephens will give them an extra edge.
