The January transfer window may be over but the free agent market means Bristol City are still able to strengthen if they wish.
Antoine Semenyo’s departure freed up some funds for the Championship to spend late in the window.
The Robins signed Anis Mehmeti from Wycombe and Harry Cornick from Luton Town but failed in their pursuits of Wimbledon right-back Jack Currie and Crystal Palace centre-back Jake O’Brien.
With City facing a nervous wait over the fitness of Kal Naismith, Nigel Pearson may look to the free agent market to add to his squad.
With that in mind, here are two players that are still available and could actually be good signings…
Dale Stephens
City already looked fairly short of central midfield options ahead of Saturday’s game at Preston North End but with Naismith limping off in the first half, it now looks like something of a problem area for them.
4-3-3 has been working fantastically for them but Matty James, Joe Williams, Alex Scott, and Andy King are now the only midfielders in the senior squad.
If the Robins want a short-term signing to do a job until the end of the season, Dale Stephens is someone they should consider.
Stephens is a free agent after leaving Burnley in the summer and his pedigree speaks for itself – with more than 100 Premier League and more than 200 EFL appearances under his belt.
Adding another aging midfielder is not ideal for the Robins but as a rotation option for the rest of the 2022/23 campaign, the former Southampton and Brighton player could be useful.

Caolan Boyd-Munce
Caolan Boyd-Munce left Middlesbrough by mutual agreement at the start of February and would be an interesting addition.
The 23-year-old was viewed as a very exciting prospect when Boro signed him from Birmingham City a few years ago but has struggled to breakthrough at the Riverside.
His career may have stalled a little but the central midfielder remains a bright talent and the Robins could help him get back on track.
Boyd-Munce is a versatile midfielder and could provide some much-needed cover if Naismith is sidelined for a significant period.
He would be a useful squad option for Pearson now but the true dividends may well come further down the line.
It could be a clever addition from a City perspective and offers them the chance to bring a player in cheaply and develop him for a profit – as they did with the likes of Josh Brownhill.
