It looks to have been another successful transfer window for Burnley, with Vincent Kompany further strengthening his squad as he looks to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The Clarets sit top of the Championship table, 17 points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough and seemingly very much on course for an instant return to the top flight. But despite their commanding position, they were incredibly active in the market.

Defenders Ameen Al-Dakhil and Hjalmar Ekdal and strikers Lyle Foster and Michael Obafemi were the notable arrivals at Turf Moor last month, with the club again not afraid to spend significant sums of money to land their top targets.

There were also a number of outgoings, with Matt Lowton, Will Norris, Dara Costelloe, Wout Weghorst, Bobby Thomas, Luke McNally and CJ Egan-Riley among those departing temporarily.

But given the strength in depth at Kompany’s disposal, there may have been other players who would have hoped for a January exit with their opportunities in Lancashire limited.

Here are two players who may have been disappointed not to leave Burnley in the window.

Halil Dervisoglu

Dervisoglu joined Burnley on loan from Premier League side Brentford in September, but he has endured a frustrating spell at Turf Moor so far.

The 23-year-old is yet to start for the Clarets, with all six of his appearances for the club coming as a substitute, while has not been included in any of their last six matchday squads in all competitions.

Dervisoglu has made one incredibly meaningful contribution, scoring a last-minute winner in the club’s 3-2 win over Rotherham United in November.

But with the additions of Foster and Obafemi increasing the competition in the forward areas and the recent return to fitness of Scott Twine, Dervisoglu will likely be pushed further down the pecking order.

There were reports that Brentford would recall Dervisoglu in January, although having featured for the Bees earlier in the season, he would have been unable to move elsewhere.

It seems unlikely that the Turkish international will receive many opportunities between now and the end of the season and he may have felt that a return to London was a preferable option.

Denis Franchi

Goalkeeper Franchi made the move from French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, but he is yet to make an appearance for the Clarets since his arrival.

The 20-year-old has only made the matchday squad once this season, with Aro Muric and Bailey Peacock-Farrell both ahead of him in the pecking order.

Franchi did not make a senior appearance during his time at the Parc des Princes, although he did play for their reserve side, so a departure on loan during the window would have provided him with some crucial first-team experience.

The Clarets will likely bring in a replacement should they fail to sign Muric permanently from Manchester City in the summer, but a temporary spell away would have given Franchi the opportunity to force himself into contention to at least displace Peacock-Farrell as second choice next campaign.

Franchi is clearly a player with a lot of potential and is certainly one for the future, but he may be frustrated not to have been allowed to go out to secure more minutes elsewhere.
