Birmingham City will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Championship this weekend when they host Preston North End at St Andrew’s.

Following a relatively encouraging start to the 2021/22 campaign, the Blues have hit a stumbling block in recent weeks.

A 4-1 defeat to Fulham was followed up by a 3-0 defeat to Peterborough United last Saturday as Birmingham slipped to 11th in the Championship standings.

Whilst the likes of Jeremie Bela and Kristian Pedersen could be in line to feature against Preston, some of the club’s players will be forced to watch on from the sidelines for this fixture.

Here, we take a look at TWO Birmingham players who could potentially benefit from a loan move in the January transfer window.

Connal Trueman

Connal Trueman has fallen further down the pecking order at Birmingham since Bowyer decided to bolster his goalkeeping options ahead of the 2021/22 campaign by signing Matija Sarkic from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The shot-stopper has only made one appearance for the club during the current term and is likely to be replaced in the Blues’ match-day squad by Neil Etheridge when the 31-year-old is ready to return to senior action.

In order to prevent Trueman’s development from stalling, Bowyer ought to consider loaning him out to a lower league side who will be able to provide him with the opportunity to play regular first-team football.

By producing some impressive performances next year, the shot-stopper may be able to force his way into Birmingham’s side during the 2022/23 season.

Marcel Oakley

An exciting prospect, Marcel Oakley was given the opportunity to showcase his talent in Birmingham’s League Cup clashes with Colchester United and Fulham earlier this season.

The defender marked his debut with a goal against the U’s as he recorded an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.89 in this fixture.

When you consider that Maxime Colin has excelled in the right-back position during his time at Birmingham, Oakley may need to be loaned out by Bowyer in January if he wants to provide the teenager with the opportunity to play senior football.

By sending Oakley to a club who have an excellent track-record of developing young players, the defender may end up thriving away from St Andrew’s during the latter stages of the current campaign.
