Prior to the Club World Cup competition, the winners of Europe and South America would go head-to-head in the one-off Intercontinental Cup to settle who would be crowned world champions.
From 1960 to 2004, this is the way it was done until FIFA expanded the tournament. The tournament will be expanded to 24 teams beginning with the Club World Cup competition that was originally slated for summer 2021.
