After getting to grips with his surroundings at Old Trafford and Carrington over the last few weeks, Ruben Amorim has some vital decisions to make heading into the January window.
As it stands, all of Amad Diallo, Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire will be free to talk to foreign clubs in January regarding a potential move for when their contracts expire in seven months’ time. Of the sextet, only Amad and Maguire have one-year options available in their terms, with the former currently locked in negotiations to sign a long-term deal.
For Maguire, his situation looks considerably more uncertain. You’d expect that Manchester United will activate the clause to keep him for an additional season, but beyond that, it remains to be seen where his future lies.
When INEOS took the reins in February as co-owners, reports suggested they’d implement a strict transfer policy of primarily signing young talents. Granting the England international, who will be 32 when his contract expires, an extension would perhaps go against such plans.

He’ll be doing all he can to become an integral piece of Amorim’s puzzle in the coming months, however. Despite being sidelined with an injury from October to November, Maguire returned to the fold to make a 34-minute cameo against Everton on Sunday, ensuring the backline’s clean sheet stayed intact for the final half-hour of the clash.
Manchester Evening News now claims that the Sheffield-born centre-half is ‘hopeful’ he can prove his worth to the United hierarchy and eventually be offered a new deal altogether.
Amorim has proven that he’s willing to rotate when necessary and give each player their chance to step up to the plate, while his 3-4-3 formation may prevent Maguire from being caught out with his lack of pace.
