The award is given to the best Under-21 player in Europe. Greenwood has taken one step closer to the prize after making the final 40. The original shortlist accounted for 100 players.

There are a number of top young players in contention for the award. Greenwood is one of the more experienced names in the list having made 109 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Greenwood’s path to the award is blocked by a number of similarly excellent players. English duo Jude Bellingham and Bukoya Saka are also in the race while Real Madrid new-boy Eduardo Camavinga is also in the fray.

As of yet, three United players have won the prestigious award. Wayne Rooney was the first to do it in 2004 while Anderson managed the same in 2008. The last Red Devils ace to follow in the footsteps was Anthony Martial in 2015.

Paul Pogba is also a former winner, having won the award in 2013. He was however a Juventus player during that point in time.
