Liverpool are reportedly one of three clubs keeping tabs on 18-goal Inter forward Lautaro Martinez’s contract situation as they ponder a move this summer.

According to 90Min, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have all asked to be kept in the loop in regards to Martinez’s availability ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims Martinez could be bought for less than £70m this summer if he does not put pen to paper on a long-term contract extension at Inter.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already admitted that he does not expect any huge transfers to take place this summer for financial reasons. This means that a move for Martinez may be out of the question, depending on what Klopp classes as huge money and exactly how much Inter would take for the forward. The report states less than £70m, but that can range from 50p to £69.9m, so it is tough to judge whether or not this would be a viable transfer for Liverpool from a financial standpoint.

In terms of the player, Martinez could be a great fit at Liverpool. He can play as a striker, a second striker and as an attacking midfielder, showing that he could be flexible within Klopp’s system and interchange with the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah on the pitch. This could cause confusion for opposition defenders as they attempt to mark the trio in games. Martinez has the end product to match, with 18 goals and six assists for Inter in all competitions this season.

Therefore, Martinez could be a superb addition to Liverpool’s squad, but we doubt the 18-goal forward will be heading to Anfield this summer due to Klopp’s comments about what he expects to happen in the window. If Liverpool are not going to splash out big money on players then Martinez may not be a player they can afford to sign.
