With Rangers’ transfer business well and truly up and running now, Ibrox Noise wanted to have a look at the fee numbers of Rangers transfer spend.
Russell Martin was promised ‘a significant chunk’ of the £20M investment we were told about during the takeover, and we want to explore how much so far it appears we’ve spent.
So without further ado:
Óscar Cortés:
£4.5M. Unfortunately we were forced by the previous regime into this investment – this was hopefully separate from the rest of the budget, but that’s conjecture. It may well have been part of it.
Joe Rothwell:
£500,000. This was a low-cost signing, at his age and coming from the Championship, thankfully he was surplus at Bournemouth otherwise it would have been a lot higher.
Emmanuel Fernandez:
£3.5M. Barry Fry played a blinder at Peterborough with this one, a market value reported by transfermarkt of about £300,000 and this defender got over 10 times that. That is information from our sources AND Sky Sports, not Wee Rab at the pub. A player lowly rated by most Posh fans, surplus at his club, and we shelled out £3.5M for an unwanted League One player. Ben Davies anyone?
Thelo Aasgaard:
£5M. Another blinder, this time by Luton – a playmaker with 3 assists in League One in 48 appearances? It’s not a stunner. He is similar to Josh Windass, scores but doesn’t create much. £5M is a big gamble and the source of that number? 4lads. He is English, but has eligibility for Norway so represents them – one cap. 14 goals last season for an AM ain’t bad but it was League One. 12 career assists in 183 appearances? 32 goals. We’re not blown away by this one but hope to be proven wrong as always.
The rest are all loans or free – Lyall Cameron (precontract), Max Aarons (loan), Nasser Djiga (loan).
We’ve spent £13.5M this summer already if Cortes is part of Rangers transfer spend and we can’t say it’s a single penny well spent yet.
But if it turns out we have great players, once again we’ll be thrilled to hold our hands up in concession at being incorrect.
We are also aware some fuming Rangers fans will disagree with the numbers and claim we’ve overcooked them – well, in that case take your case up with our sources, and Sky as well as 4lads.
