Authorities in Montpellier announced yesterday that a 14-year old teen tragically died during the celebrations following France’s qualification for the World Cup final. An official communiqué from the Hérault prefecture said that the young man was “violently hit by a driver this Wednesday evening in Montpellier, following the World Cup semi final match”.

The statement detailed that after being taken an accident and emergency ward, the boy died shortly after receiving medical attention – and that the vehicle in question was found and impounded. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene, and according to Le Parisien the registration details say is a white Citroën C4. Police are hoping to find the driver as quick as possible and have ruled out punitive measures so far as the matter is handed over to regional police forces.
