Plymouth Argyle had a hectic summer as Wayne Rooney reshaped the squad ahead of his first season in charge of the club.

Whilst the first few weeks suggest a tough campaign could lie ahead, there was one positive for Plymouth, as they managed to resist interest in star man Morgan Whittaker, with Burnley making a strong late push to sign the attacker.

There is a lot of talent at Home Park, but it will come as no surprise that FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Chris identified the ex-Derby man as the most valuable player at the club, as he praised the club for standing firm in the summer, as well as predicting more interest in Whittaker moving forward.

Chris said: “Looking at Argyle’s squad, there’s one player who stands out as higher value than the others, and that has to be Morgan Whittaker.

He was subject to a lot of transfer speculation during the most recent window, including from Burnley, who reportedly offered £10m.

I believe he should be valued between £12m to £15m. Last year he was on the radar of clubs like Lazio, who saw a £15m bid turned down.

The January transfer window will open up opportunities again for further bidding from various clubs around the world. However, I do hope that Whittaker will choose to stay at Argyle, as we’ve shown that loyalty to hold on to him.”

Plymouth Argyle must demand a big fee for Morgan Whittaker

Most would agree that Plymouth should be demanding up to £15m for Whittaker, and they were right to dismiss Burnley’s previous offer that was up to £10m.

Simply put, a player with this goalscoring record is hard to find, as he scored 19 times and registered eight assists in the Championship last season.

To do that for a side that battled against relegation was even more impressive, and it’s not just about goals with Whittaker, as his all-round game is impressive, and he has excellent technical ability.

When you factor in that he is only 23, so he has plenty of room for improvement, and that his deal with the Pilgrims runs until 2027, Plymouth should not be bullied in the market for Rooney's talisman.

Of course, Argyle would be making a big profit on Whittaker if they do cash in, and it’s likely that there will be a time when a suitable offer does arrive, and the recruitment team will need to use that money to improve the XI.

Morgan Whittaker will hope to flourish under Wayne Rooney

Pleasingly, with the window now shut, all the talk surrounding Whittaker will stop, and he will be allowed to concentrate on his football.

Rooney’s men have endured a difficult start to the season, but there have been signs of encouragement since the opening day defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

The new boss will recognise that Whittaker is a real talent, and he will be key to the side as they look to climb the table.
