Max Wober once again faces an uncertain immediate future at Leeds United and could be poised to move out of the Elland Road exit door before Friday evening's transfer deadline, with the Whites being told of just how much they should accept for the Austrian defender.

Wober joined Leeds from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023, as the then-Premier League side forked out a reported £11m fee for his services. He made 16 top-flight appearances for Leeds before leaving on loan to Borussia Monchengladbach as one of a series of Whites players to have sought departures in the wake of relegation to the Championship that summer.

For the second summer running, though, Daniel Farke has overseen a significant squad exodus with a whole host of prized assets earning moves elsewhere after Leeds fell to defeat at the hands of Southampton in May's Championship play-off final.

Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, Glen Kamara and Georginio Rutter represent the high-profile departures from West Yorkshire this summer, while the likes of Charlie Cresswell, Sam Greenwood, Jamie Shackleton, Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente have also moved on.

It very much appears as though Wober could be yet another player to leave the Leeds camp amid interest from Monchengladbach, who are eyeing a loan return for the player according to Sky Sports Germany.

Wober made 26 appearances for Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga last term and impressed enough to encourage them to plot a return, although the latest report reveals that Gerardo Seoane's side are not currently financially capable of brokering a permanent deal and will need to sanction player sales first.

Verdict given on Leeds United's Max Wober amid Borussia Monchengladbach interest

Wober currently finds himself as Leeds' third-choice central defender behind both Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk, with regular starting opportunities likely to come as a real premium this season for the 26-year-old if he stays put.

With that in mind, Football League World's resident Whites fan pundit Kris Smith believes the club would be more likely to consider a permanent exit for Wober and has outlined an ideal price.

"It would be very harsh on Max Wober's abilities, in my opinion, if he did end up as third-choice at Leeds in the Championship, being behind Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk - but that's just the reality he faces at the moment," Kris explained to Football League World.

"Unfortunately we do have arguably the best pairing in the division right now in Rodon and Struijk, two clean sheets in three games already.

"Wober's not really in a position to force his way back into that reckoning as a starer given that he's got to win the trust of Farke, the squad and the fans back after going out on loan last season, and he's got to prove that he's better than Struijk and that's just not happening.

"Struijk is probably the best centre-half in the division now that Burnley have lost a couple of theirs [Dara O'Shea to Ipswich Town, Ameen Al-Dakhil set to join Stuttgart].

"A move away would make a lot of sense from Wober's perspective given he'd go to a team where he starts a lot, maybe that's Borussia Monchengladbach or someone else in the Bundesliga.

"It's only been a loan [offer] so far and I don't see Leeds being in a position to agree to a loan given we'd need to replace him and it would take some cost to do that.

"I would like to keep him on that note given he's great back-up in the Championship - he'd start for a lot of teams - but if a permanent offer did come and it was around the £10m mark or higher, I can see Leeds accepting before Friday and getting the ducks in a row to replace him."

Leeds United must get Max Wober off the books

At 26 and with international credentials, Wober would be well-served by finding a permanent home where he can kick on and obtain the regular football that just will not be forthcoming at Leeds.

The Whites, meanwhile, could collect a fair fee for Wober's services and getting his wages off the club's accounts would be a positive cost-cutting exercise given he does not really figure in Farke's thinking.
