After having two bids rejected for the centre-half last summer, it was claimed Manchester United would return for Jarrad Branthwaite at some stage in the near future.
Now, as we approach the summer window, it remains to be seen if the Everton stalwart remains a firm option on the Reds’ shortlist – especially after the additions of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt for a combined £90 million upfront last year.
United were made to pursue alternatives when it became clear the Toffees would play hardball in negotiations for Branthwate, which, in fairness, you can’t really blame them for, given the stellar season he’d just overseen on Merseyside.
The one-capped England international, 22, has only continued to flourish this season – albeit after a delayed start to 2024/2025 due to a groin injury.

A mainstay in Everton’s starting XI, Branthwaite has frequently been a standout performer even amidst his side’s tumultuous form; the Blues are renowned for their defensive prowess, and it’s seen them keep clean sheets against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Brighton and Hove Albion.
Last night, he took to the field for the last-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in hopes of derailing arch-rivals Liverpool’s title hopes – and that he did.
Not only did Branthwaite assist Beto for the 11th-minute opener, he won 100% of his aerial duels and 100% of his tackles. He took 60 touches in total while recording 16 clearances, 10 passes into the final third and blocking two shots. Additionally, no Liverpool player was able to dribble past the defender during his 90-minute shift.
Such a display would have undoubtedly caught the eye of his suitors across Europe, though it’s certainly given Everton enough reason to ramp up their valuation.
