With every passing game that Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona play, it’s becoming clear that it’s time to start having a serious conversation about Eric Garcia as a legitimate right-back option. The narrative of ‘he can fill in there’ no longer does him justice.

Garcia has been playing at right-back since Jules Kounde’s injury against Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-finals, and the 24-year-old has taken to the role like a fish to water, never once looking out of place.

He started at right-back in Barcelona’s pre-season game against Vissel Kobe, ahead of Kounde, and was arguably the best player in the first-half XI. The former Manchester City player has also made a habit of getting on the scoresheet.

Eric had an excellent first 45 against Vissel Kobe

As per stats from Sofascore, Eric played 45 minutes against Kobe and opened the scoring for the Catalan side. During his time on the pitch, he attempted three tackles, won all of his ground duels, and also won his only aerial duel.

The Spanish international was heavily involved, recording 62 touches and completing 40 of his 44 passes with an impressive 91% accuracy. His distribution included two key passes, and he also completed two of his three attempted long balls.

It’s safe to say that Eric gave Hansi Flick further evidence of why he doesn’t need a new backup right-back. The Spaniard is more than capable of rotating with Kounde and even allowing the Frenchman to play in central defence when needed.

Jack of all trades and now mastering one

Eric has long been a jack of all trades, but he now appears to be mastering one. He looks most comfortable on the right side of defence, and that role could very well become his primary position in the seasons ahead.

With each passing game, Eric continues to silence his detractors and underline his value to Barcelona. Players like him are rare in today’s market, regardless of budget, and the club is fortunate to have him. All one can hope for now is that he continues to grow in the role for years to come.
