It was one-way traffic in this second semi-final but Barcelona had to dig deep to beat Real Madrid to move one step closer to the Supercopa de España Femenina title.

Even without star player Alexia Putellas, Barcelona dominated possession of the ball during the first half (73%) and managed to take the game to Real Madrid.

Keira Walsh and Aitana Bonmatí pulled the strings for the reigning champions before Claudia Pina’s low drive from outside the box turned things 1-0.

However, a lacklustre Real Madrid (who only had one shot in the opening half) came out after the break with a new game plan.

And when the opportunity arrived, Caroline Weir was able to level things 10 minutes after the restart with a long-range free-kick.

Things then went from bad to worse for Barcelona, as defender Irene Paredes was sent off minutes later, leaving them down a player for roughly 30 minutes.

Over time, neither side could find a late winner, so the match went to extra time.

Then it was Madrid’s turn to implode defensively, and Mariona Caldentey turned home the winner from the penalty spot in the 111th minute before Salma Paralluelo added a third.

Barcelona will now face Real Sociedad in the Supercopa de España Femenina final on Sunday.
