RB Leipzig beat Freiburg on penalties on Saturday to win their first-ever DFB Pokal title.
Scorers: Eggestein 18′; Nkunku 77′
The stage was set at the Olympiastadion Berlin with Freiburg featuring in their first-ever cup final and RB Leipzig hoping the third time was the charm.
It was a match of few chances on the pitch but when the golden opportunity arrived for Freiburg, Maximilian Eggestein made sure to make the most of it and his low drive from outside of the box blasted past Péter Gulácsi for 1-0.
As time went on RB Leipzig pushed for an equaliser and maintained more possession and had more attempts though their efforts fell short.
Then to make matters worse, they went down a man after Marcel Halstenberg brought down Lucas Höler who was through on goal meaning Leipzig had plenty to do if they wanted to turn things around.
However, star man Christopher Nkunku turned up at the right moment once again and made things 1-1 which then sent the match into extra time.
During the extra 30 minutes, Freiburg struggled with their momentum but came the closest to taking the lead when two efforts from Janik Haberer hit the woodwork. Leipzig then thought they had a chance of their own from the penalty spot but VAR deemed otherwise.
The final was then decided on penalties and Leipzig prevailed 4-2.
